Your journey takes you to the heart of Prek Toal Floating Village, a lively community surrounded by waterways, fishing activities, and daily routines shaped by the rhythm of the lake. From there, you venture into the protected Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary, one of Southeast Asia’s most important bird colonies. Here, you can spot rare and endangered species, including storks, pelicans, and darters, especially during the peak birding season.
This tour offers an unforgettable blend of culture, nature, and photography—perfect for travelers seeking authentic local life and incredible wildlife encounters. An optional overnight stay allows you to experience sunrise over the lake and enjoy the village in its most peaceful moments.
Pick-up is scheduled for 4:30 AM.
It’s an early start as we leave the hotel at 4:30 am. After that, it’s a 40-minute drive in our air-conditioned vehicle to Mechrey Floating Village, where we’ll board a boat that will take us to Prek Toal Floating Village and Bird Sanctuary. From the boat, as you gently drift along, you’ll get to see local Khmer fishermen bringing in their catch while we watch the sunrise over Tonle Sap Lake.
Prek Toal is one of the largest floating villages on the lake and is located in Battambang, at the mouth of the Sangke River. More than 2,000 families live in Prek Toal Floating Village, so it has its own school, floating market, Buddhist temple, and even a crocodile farm (where the crocodiles are kept in cages under the boardwalk).
You’ll have the opportunity to explore Prek Toal and visit Osmose Basket Weaving, where locals plait water hyacinth reeds harvested from the lake, dried, and woven into mats and baskets. Afterwards, we’ll join a local Cambodian family for lunch, sitting on woven mats in their home, eating, smiling, and laughing together.
After lunch, we’ll take a shallow boat through the mangrove forests so you can get up close and observe the water birds.
If you have time, you also have the opportunity to stay overnight with a local family in Prek Toal—perfect if you want to fully immerse yourself and experience life in a floating village.
